    Oman Aviation Services to invest $4.2 m in IT services

Oman Aviation Services (OAS), the parent company of Oman Air, is to invest $4.2 million over four years in major IT improvements at Muscat International Airport, following 22 per cent growth in passengers travelling on the national airline last year. The investment programme agreed with SITAwill cover all essential airport operations including check-in, flight boarding and baggage management. The four-year program will be fully operational in three months. SITA will both install and maintain AirportConnect Open; SITA BagManager; and PassengerHandler.

    Malaysian company wins low cost terminal expansion contract

Fajarbaru Builder Group Berhad announced that it has received a Letter of Acceptance from Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) in respect of the “Proposed Design, Construct and Complete the Expansion of Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) at KL International Airport, Sepang, Malaysia”. The company also mentioned that the total contract sum is RM123.9 million.  The contract period is for 11 months and the commencement date of the works is on 7 April 2008. The contract is expected to contribute positively to the earnings and net assets of the FBG Group.

  DWC signs deal with Palm Aviation

Dubai World Central (DWC) Aviation City has signed a deal with Palm Aviation to set up the project’s first fixed-base operation (FBO) ground handling facility. The AED40 million 80,000 sq ft facility to cater to the booming flight support services industry will be built within Dubai World Central. Palm Aviation will extend their existing global flight support operations centre to DWC Aviation City from its existing Dubai Airport Free Zone office. Al Maktoum International Airport goes live with initial cargo operations by end-2008 and has been designed to handle 120-150 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo annually.

Changi to invest and develop Phu Bai International Airport

Changi Airports International (CAI) has signed an MOU with the Middle Airports Authority of Vietnam (MAA) to invest, develop and operate Phu Bai International Airport in the city of Hue. Phu Bai International Airport is located in the City of Hue, which was the capital of Vietnam between 1744 and 1945. It is ideally situated as the gateway to Thua Thien Hue Province and the Middle Region. The airport currently handles more than 500,000 passengers per annum and was designated Vietnam’s fourth international airport in August 2007.

Emirates to launch new low cost airline

The new airline is being set up on the orders of HH Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, VP, PM of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Sheikh Mohammed instructed the competent authorities to set up a new airline company to cater for the growing passenger traffic from and to the UAE. HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates welcomed the establishment of a new airline in Dubai: “Emirates welcomes this announcement, and any new Dubai airline operation. Dubai's Open Skies policy encourages the growth of air transport, which has and continues to contribute to the development of this city. The new airline, a low cost carrier, will complement the international air services already provided by Emirates.” Ghaith Saeed Al Ghaith was named CEO of the new airline company.

Jewers Doors in JV supplies doors for largest MRO hangar in Asia

Construction of Ameco Beijing's A380 aircraft maintenance hangar, the largest in Asia, was completed at Beijing's Capital Airport and inaugurated on 18 March 2008. The hangar, which has a floor area of more than 70,000 sq m, can accommodate all Boeing and Airbus series aircraft including A380. With joint venture partner, Baotong Door Company of Shenyang in China, Jewers Doors designed an Esavian Type 126 sliding hangar door measuring 350 m wide by 27 m high, which spans the full width of the four-bay A380 hangar.

King Abdulaziz International Airport selects GE Security

GE Security recently announced the deployment and installation of new access control and fire and life safety systems at King Abdulaziz International Airport’s Hajj Terminal in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The installation includes the new DirecDoor™ IP door controller to efficiently manage access at the large terminal’s many doors. Hajj Terminal is the first to use this advanced technology to economically control hundreds of doors. Hajj Terminal can accommodate 80,000 travelers and is estimated to be the world's fourth largest air terminal.  King Abdulaziz International Airport is Saudi Arabia's third largest air facility.

Warsaw Airport opens T2 with UFIS

With the installation of its Universal Flight Information System (UFIS®), UFIS Airport Solutions (UFIS-AS) made a major contribution to allow Polish Airports State Enterprise (PPL) to open the new terminal at Frederic Chopin International Airport, Warsaw in March 2008. The expansion of the UFIS® installation at Warsaw was completed in three phases. The first phase involved the installation of new server hardware, an upgrade of the Oracle® database and the migration of the UFIS® installation from Unixware to Solaris 9 from Sun Microsystems. The second phase included an upgrade to the most recent version of the UFIS® package (version 4.5). The upgrade was carried out without affecting airport operations.
