New Bangalore airport to be inaugurated on April 2, 2008

The opening date of the new international airport at Bangalore, as fixed by Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), is April 2, 2008. This information was given by Praful Patel, Minister for Civil Aviation, Government of India, in the Indian Parliament recently. The Minister informed the Parliament that the State Government of Karnataka has suggested that the new airport be known as ‘Bangalore International Airport’. As a matter of general policy, the name of the city is retained for naming the airport since passengers and visitors in general, and foreign tourists in particular, find it easier to identify the airport when it is named after the city it serves.

First CUSS site to be deployed in the Middle East

Royal Jordanian has selected IER to supply the first Common Use Self-Service (CUSS) check-in platform to be deployed in the Middle East. This project was initiated by Royal Jordanian in cooperation with IATA who had selected the Amman Airport to be the first place for the implementation of the CUSS programme in the region. IER has installed 15 IER 978 kiosks, equipped with ATB, GPP and bag tag printers, a passport reader and a bar code reader. Those kiosks are deployed at Queen Alia International Airport of Amman, in the City Terminal of Amman, and at Aqaba Airport, in the south of the country. In addition to the kiosks, IER also provided Royal Jordanian with the full CUSS application, the multi-airlines interface as well as the monitoring solution which allows the remote supervision in real time of the installed base.

DWC to build ME’s highest ATC tower

Construction on the Middle East’s highest air traffic control tower worth an estimated AED143 million has begun at Dubai World Central, the urban aviation community taking shape at Jebel Ali in Dubai. Awarded to Arabtec/Max Bogl, a Dubai-German joint venture company, the project consists of a 91 metre high air traffic control tower and a technical block of 6,000 sq m which will house offices, operations, technical rooms, flight simulator and a meteor observation cabin. The facility has an airside / landside interface with secured access to airside, offering air traffic controllers the ability to handle multiple airborne airplanes as well as grounded crafts. JXB, when completed, will be the world’s largest airport with six parallel 4.5 km runways, up to 16 cargo terminals, two mega passenger terminals and six concourses, with a capacity to handle 120 million passengers and 12 million tons of cargo annually

Airports to benefit from surging airline capacity – CAPA

The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) predicts Asia Pacific airports will be the key beneficiaries of the predicted surge in airline capacity and entrants in 2007 and beyond, according to its new Aviation Outlook report. “But major challenges face the airport sector in Asia, among them, the provision of enough capacity, funding development, and matching appropriate facilities to a rapidly segmenting airline sector. The problems are most severe at airports serving the fast-growing emerging markets, including China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam, according to the Outlook report. The Centre estimates the 60 leading (active and potential) global airport investors have a combined pool of approximately US$50 billion ready to invest. The global airport privatisation pipeline is valued at up to US$40 billion – so competition will intensify in the sector. In 2006, 15 major airports/airport groups were privatised worldwide.

The joint venture company will be bidding for the investments and operations of Chennai Airport and Kolkata airport under the ongoing Indian government’s airport privatization program which started two years ago. The scope of the joint venture will also extend to investments in other airports including regional airports as well as airports which have already been privatized. In March 2006, CAI took on the task of implementing a 100 day Improvement Program for the Mumbai International Airport. That airport was secured by a consortium which included GVK of India and the Airport Consortium of South Africa.

African Union to organise air transport development forum

The African Union, with the support of ATAG, ICAO, and the World Bank, has decided to conduct a development forum on ‘Maximising Civil Aviation’s Economic Contribution in African Skies’, which will be held at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa during April 23-25, 2007. Currently, the civil aviation sector is facing great challenges especially in Africa. However, the economic importance of civil aviation remains one of the central factors when considering strategies and measures to cope with current realities. In addition, many African countries depend heavily on a functioning air transport network for their economic growth efforts and initiatives. The objectives of the forum are promoting air transport as a catalyst for economic growth and development in Africa; reviewing changes in policies, management, and technologies affecting air transport; addressing constraints in implementing and/or operating air transport systems and services; identifying regulatory approaches, benchmarks, and other measures for remedial action; and promoting close cooperation and private/public sector partnerships in air transport development.

Splendid new Duty Free Store opens at Leifur Eiriksson Air Terminal

The Duty Free Store Ltd has opened a splendid new store for departing passengers on Level 2 of the Leifur Eiriksson Air Terminal. The store has a floor area of 1,150 sq m, which is about double the size of the old Duty Free Store. The Duty Free Store will continue to sell cosmetics, confectionery, alcoholic beverages and tobacco. Various electrical goods and multimedia products will also continue to be sold in the store for the time-being. This will change at the end of March, when an ELKO electrical-goods store opens in the Departure area, and a Skifan store opens selling music, films, computer games and other entertainment goods. The Duty Free Store Ltd now operates four stores in the Terminal – two for departing passengers, one for transfer passengers from outside the Schengen area, and the fourth for arriving passengers, on Level 1.
