 UAE: Jebel Ali Airport City unveiled

Jebel Ali Airport City, a pioneering concept in urban planning of large airports spearheaded by the Government of Dubai and its Department of Civil Aviation, had its international aviation trade and media launch at Dubai 2005, the ninth international aerospace exhibition. Central to Jebel Ali Airport City (JAAC) - the vast, 140 square kilometre development - is Jebel Ali International Airport (JXB), which upon completion, will be the combined size of London's Heathrow and Chicago's O'Hare airports. With at least six parallel runways and as many concourses capable of handling more than 120 million passengers and more than 12 million tonnes of cargo per year, JXB, which is 40 kilometres from Dubai International Airport (DIA), is a long-term visionary project, designed to serve the emirate's passenger and cargo air transportation needs until 2050 and beyond.

 

   TURKEY: TAV starts work in Georgia

TAV started to operate the airport in Georgia, with its partner Urban operating in the region, the company said in a statement. The operation process will be carried out for 15 years and 6 months with TAV Georgia. The organisation and mobilisation preparations necessary for the Tbilisi International Airport new passenger terminal building and the relevant infrastructure constructions are about to be completed. The construction-related site work is continuing, and after the construction permits and approvals are approved, the construction will begin by the first week of December 2005. It is planned to take into service the new terminal building and the modernised infrastructure facilities (the expansion of the existing runway, the taxiway, the apron, the fire brigade building, etc.) are planned to be taken into service in November 2006. Dr Sani Sener, TAV CEO, stated that initially a $62 million-investment will be made. He included that, upon the take over of the terminal operations by TAV, the new terminal building and the runway renewal constructions will begin simultaneously. Dr Sener who stated that they will be operating the Tbilisi airport for 10 years, and make an airport investment of 15 million dollars for Batumi, said they may extend the operation of the Tbilisi Airport to 15 years, extending the operation for 5 years, in return for the investment in Batumi.

POLAND: Siemens/ADB equips Ok?cie Airport

Warsaw Ok?cie Airport in Warsaw is being developed and a new terminal (T2) is being built by the consortium of Ferrovial Agroman S.A., Budimex S.A and Studio Lamela S.L. as the General Contractor, the official Siemens newsletter reported. Siemens/ADB signed a contract for the delivery and installation of airfield ground lighting with the consortium. The net value of the contract is PLN 6.52 million (EUR 1.6 million). The project covers the modernization of three existing parking areas for aircraft and construction of a new parking area near the second terminal of Ok?cie Airport. During the course of the project Siemens/ADB will deliver and install over 1300 Cat.III taxiway and apron lights and 51 guidance signs. The new installation will be included into the operating lighting control and monitoring system. The project execution is divided into four stages, of which three are scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

SOUTH AFRICA: ACSA unveils revamped JIA duty free mall

Airports Company South Africa Limited (ACSA) recently unveiled its revamped duty free mall at Johannesburg International Airport (JIA) - the unveiling coinciding with the launch of its "Come EARLY for Christmas" promotion in which nearly R700,000 can be won at Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban International Airports. ACSA also revealed its plans for a R53 million extension to JIA's duty free mall, due for completion by the end of 2007, well ahead of the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

SINGAPORE: SATS expands presence in China

Singapore Airport Terminal Services Limited (SATS) is expanding its presence in China through its interest in Tianjin Airport Cargo Services Co Ltd (TACS), the company said in a statement.
The initial investment in TACS will be CNY50 million (approximately SGD10.4 million) in total. TACS will provide cargo handling, aircraft ramp services, cargo agency services and other air transport-related services at Tianjin Airport. SATS already has an interest in inflight catering operations at Tianjin Airport, through its associated company Beijing Airport Inflight Kitchen Limited, which established an inflight catering joint venture, Tianjin Airport Kitchen Ltd, with TBIA in September 2004.

INDIA: L&T wins Rs 263 crore order for Hyderabad airport

Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) has won an additional order valued at Rs 263 crores for the construction of the passenger terminal building at the proposed Hyderabad International Airport. The order, received from China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Limited - main contractors for a part of the airport project package - follows the Rs 495 crores order received by L&T from Hyderabad International Airport Limited (HIAL) in August for the construction of the runway, taxiway and aprons. The new airport, to be located at Shamshabad, is promoted by the HIAL, a partnership initiative between the GMR Group, the Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Airports Authority of India.
