    Sensis to provide Multilateration to DWC

Sensis Corporation announced that it will integrate with the Park Air Systems Advanced – Surface Movement Guidance and Control System its multilateration surveillance system, Multistatic Dependent Surveillance (MDS), for ground surveillance at Dubai World Central International Airport (DWC). Sensis MDS will provide high-accuracy multilateration surveillance as well as the ability for future transition to Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B). Initially, Sensis MDS will be deployed to cover the first runway and taxi areas as well as the apron and stand areas. Sensis MDS, a transponder multilateration surveillance system, provides precision equal to or better than traditional airport surveillance radar as well as higher update rates. Additionally, it provides consistent surveillance performance regardless of weather conditions.

      First renovation phase of Hajj Terminal completed in Jeddah

The first renovated part of Hajj terminal at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah has come into service, it was announced. The operations management of this terminal, dedicated to pilgrims, is granted to a private consortium - Aéroports de Paris Management. The first phase of the renovation dealt with the reconstruction of 32,000 sq m of a terminal and the renovation of part of the Plazza (64,000 sq m). After this first phase of works which lasted eight months, the Hajj terminal will be entirely renovated for the 2008 pilgrimage. Its total surface area will cover 94,000 sq m. In total, it will include a central check-in area of 64 desks which can be increased to 168 during the Hajj period and 10 contact aircraft stands for jumbo jets. The Plaza will cover a total surface area of 160,000 sq m. During the big pilgrimage period, the traffic is monoflow. During one month, there are arrivals only (From November 11 to December 14) and the following month, departures only (from 23 December 2007 to 24 January 2008).

  Bombardier completes APM System at Beijing Capital Airport

Bombardier Transportation announced it has completed the design and installation of the driverless automated people mover (APM) at Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA). After a period of trial running, the BOMBARDIER CX-100 system will begin passenger service in March 2008, prior to the opening of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Bombardier is also operating and maintaining the system. The 2-kilometre transit system operates on dual-guideway between two stations, serving the new terminal, T3.  Designed to carry 4,100 passengers per hour per direction, the 11 CX-100 vehicles are capable of operating as single-car trains or in consists of up to 4-car trains.

Tarsier to be installed at Doha Int’l Airport

Doha International Airport in the State of Qatar is to install Tarsier, the runway debris detection system developed by QinetiQ. The announcement was made at Dubai Air Show. Tarsier will detect foreign object debris (FOD) on the single runway at Doha International, which at 4,572 m is one of the longest in the world. Three radars will scan the runway area 24 hours a day and in all weathers, locating objects that could be drawn into engines or damage aircraft systems. The New Doha International Airport is expected to open in 2009 with a capacity of 50 million passengers a year once fully completed. QinetiQ and Qatar Airways are currently in negotiations about the potential installation of a Tarsier system to cover the two runways at the New Doha International Airport when they go operational.

Gelendjik Int’l Airport awards contract to Vanderlande

Vanderlande Industries has been awarded the contract for the baggage handling system of the new International Terminal at Gelendjik Airport in the Russian Federation. The contract is worth over €1.5 million. The system consists of 8 check-in desks and inline automatic level 1 and level 2 screening in the first stage, that will be operational May 1st 2008. All screened bags which are security cleared will be transported to a tilted TRIPLANAR™ make-up carousel. A second make-up carousel is foreseen in stage 2 of the project. 

In stage 2, to be installed during 2008, a second check-in line will be connected as well as inline automatic level 3 screening and fully integrated and automatic customs screening, allowing customs to check every bag that goes through the system. The arrival system that comprises of two tilted TRIPLANAR™ carousels also includes inline screening of all arriving baggage. A third arrival carousel is to be installed in stage 2.

Abu Dhabi Airport upgrading to be complete before end of 2008

Upgrading works at Abu Dhabi International Airport will be complete before the end of year 2008, top official revealed. Meanwhile, work on the second runway is progressing fast, with construction work due to be completed in February ‘08. The airport’s third terminal, which will come on line in-mid 2008, will almost double the current capacity to 12 million passengers. Featuring eight gates, including two A380 compatible, the new terminal will meet the demand of Etihad Airways until the Midfield Terminal Complex is ready in 2010. ADAC also plans to build a new 4-star hotel adjacent to Terminal 3. The 4-storey facility, to be opened in the first quarter of 2009, will provide an additional 320 room capacity. There are also plans for two other hotels to cope with the anticipated surge in demand.

 Alcatel-Lucent awarded contract at new King Shaka Int’l Airport

Alcatel-Lucent announced it has been awarded a multi-year contract worth approximately Euros 34 million by the Ilembe Consortium to design and deploy an integrated communication, security and IT system for the new King Shaka International Airport north of Durban, South Africa. The airport, which initially is expected to handle more than 7.5 million passengers a year, is being built in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. Alcatel-Lucent will implement a complete information and communications system for the new international airport. The company will provide project management, design, integration, installation and deployment of the solution, which will consist of 25 subsystems spanning telecoms backbone, security and IT systems. Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its 7750 Service Router in the core for IP/VPN and security, and the 5620 Service Aware Manager to ensure the highest possible quality of service, end-to-end across the MPLS backbone network.

Trial runs begin at new Bangalore Int’l Airport

Trial runs were conducted at the new Bangalore International Airport in December 2007, the company announced. The trials were held in three stages i.e. basic, advanced and integrated and will finally conclude closer to the airport opening date on March 30, 2008. The construction and infrastructure advancements at the airport are now in the concluding stage. The commissioning of various equipments continue i.e. all the airfield lights at the runway and taxiway, passenger boarding bridges, the baggage handling system and the escalators at the terminal building. The commissioning phase also commenced at the Air Traffic Control (ATC) block. Other commissioning works include the street lights, cable checks at the airside service road and the secondary access roads.
