Plans for food courts, entertainment centre at Bahrain  airport

Catering – onboard or on the ground in airport terminals – is still an integral part of both business and leisure travel. Realising the potential of this business, Bahrain Civil Aviation Affairs plans to build a business-cum-entertainment centre, several food courts and multi-storey car park close to Bahrain International Airport. The work for these projects – expected to give a major facelift to the airport – will start in late 2006. Bahrain International Airport is expected to handle 30 million passengers a year by 2025. The airport is developing the infrastructure required to meet the demands from the passengers by opening new lounges and food courts.

Private participation for Mumbai, Delhi airport modernisation drive

At a cost of Rs 160 billion, Mumbai and New Delhi international airports will be upgraded, expanded and modernised in three phases, with private sector participation. The modernisation work in the airports is expected to begin by March 2006 and six consortia have been short listed for the same. The country requires more than Rs 400 billion during the next five to six years for upgrading the ground infrastructure facilities in its current domestic and international airports. As a result, private sector participation is now encouraged in Indian airport projects.

Grading work complete on DLC’s first phase

Grading work on the first phase of Dubai Logistics City (DLC) is now complete and construction of its first runway now under way, it was announced. Grading has taken a year to complete and seen some 20 million cubic metres of earth moved. DLC is the first phase of the 140-sq km Jebel Ali Airport City, an aviation community designed to operate as an independent free zone and to accommodate more than 750,000 residents and workers.

Construction and testing of the 4.5 km long runway is expected to take almost two years. As part of the work, construction will also begin on two 1.8 km long tunnels which will run under three of the projects six runways and form an access link from the planned passenger concourse to the cargo terminal. Spread over 25 sq km, DLC will begin operating at the end of 2007. It is aimed at catering to the logistics requirements of the greater region up to 2050 and is designed to eventually handle more than 12 million tons of air cargo annually in up to 16 air cargo terminals. DLC says the fourth quarter of this year will see construction work begin on specialised warehouses at the site while its own shared facilities, such as warehouses and office blocks, will be available in the fourth quarter of next year. Full utilities are to be available in September 2007.

AFRICA - MOROCCO
Africa committed to airport growth – ACI

ACI Director General Robert J Aaronson, speaking to airport management teams during the annual ACI Africa Region’s annual assembly, urged airport operators to respond proactively to the growth trend, emphasizing the importance for airports across the African continent. The ACI Director noted that on the African continent alone, the commitment to airport growth is demonstrated by the diversity of projects:

• The Kenya Airports Authority has announced a USD 100 million development plan for the upgrade and expansion of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.
• he
Office National des Aéroports (ONDA) signed an agreement for a new cargo terminal at Casablanca’s Mohammed V Airport. The agreement is for a multi-purpose platform covering a surface area of 30 000 m² on a 44 000-m² site, handed over to Royal Air Maroc by ONDA.
• Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has projected that it would invest an additional  ZAR 5.2 billion on airport infrastructure in the next five years, having already invested ZAR 3 billion in capital projects over the last five year period.
• Egyptian Airports Company has issued a tender for retail activities at Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport.
• Murtala
Muhammed Airport, Lagos will be the first in Nigeria to have a hotel located within its perimeter.

Worldwide, airport capital expenditure for new infrastructure reached a record $36 billion in 2005, on top of $31 billion in 2004, demonstrating once again that airports are striving to keep ahead of constantly rising demand for air travel.
