Malaysia Airports, IATA collaborate to improve airport services

Malaysia Airports has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in its continued efforts to further improve the quality of service at airports. Malaysia Airports is the first airport in Asia to have entered into an MoU with IATA, underlining its pledge to support the IATA's Simplifying the Business programme by implementing Common Use Self Service kiosks, Bar Coded Boarding Pass and Radio Frequency Identification for baggage management at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The ceremony for the exchange of the MoU was held recently at the Pan Pacific KLIA Hotel in Sepang. Malaysia Airports was represented by its Managing Director Y Bhg Dato' Seri Bashir Ahmad, while IATA was represented by its Director General and CEO Giovanni Bisignani.

    Sheikh Ahmed inaugurates Dubai International Airport Operations
    Data Management Center

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Department of Civil Aviation, Dubai, and Chairman of Emirates Group, inaugurated the Airport Operations Data Management Center – a new section at Dubai International Airport that takes care of the collection, storage, accuracy checking and distribution of airport operational data. The Airport Operations Data Management Center will provide one point of operational data contact for flight processes and resources during normal and abnormal events or circumstances, broadcast of operational flight data services promptly and accurately, generate real-time system data for smoother passenger's guidance, recorded flight related financial data including passenger service charges, produce KPIs for operational audits, record and effectively use various flight movement messages coming to Dubai International Airport from other airports, airlines and handling agents, and help in better control of all flight handling processes from landing to take-off.

AFRICA - SOUTH AFRICA
 

    ACSA concludes airport security tender

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has concluded a tender process for the provision of physical security comprising securing access control gates as well as screening vehicles accessing the restricted area. The tender process for this contract commenced in June 2005. The provision of physical security is for a five-year period. Group 4 Securicor will provide services at Johannesburg International Airport with effect from April 1, 2006. They take over from Springbok Khulani and Enlightened Security, whose contracts expires on March 31, 2006. Bosasa Security will continue to provide services in the car park areas at Johannesburg International Airport.

AFRICA-MOROCCO
 

    SITA signs $5.6 million contract with ONDA

SITA has recently announced that it has won a five-year, $5.6 million contract from the Moroccan National Office of Airports (ONDA) to improve passenger flow through the country’s main airports in Casablanca, Agadir and Marrakech. SITA has been contracted by ONDA to install and maintain AirportConnect CUTE (common user terminal), a state-of-the art IT system for managing busy airport environments. 

“Traffic at these airports is expanding fast from 7 million passengers in 2005. Tourism in 2006 is expected to grow by 12 per cent.  We are very satisfied to have SITA as our IT partner. Not only can they meet our needs today but they are also able to provide us with a development path to the future of common-use airport functionality,” said Dr. Abdelhanine Benallou, CEO ONDA.

Dubai World Central set to be world’s biggest hub

The final master-plan and branding of the 140 sq km Dubai World Central, almost twice the size of Hong Kong Island, was recently unveiled. The development, at Jebel Ali, some 40 km south of Dubai city centre, includes Dubai World Central International Airport (JXB) with a cluster of specialised zones. Dubai World Central will be a new city where eventually some 750,000 people will live and work. It is designed to support Dubai’s aviation, tourism, commercial and logistics requirements until 2050 and infrastructure costs alone will run to US $33 billion. 

Dubai World Central International Airport (JXB) is set to be the world’s largest passenger and cargo hub with a design capacity of over 12 million tons of cargo a year and in excess of 120 million passengers annually and capable of handling all new generation aircraft, including the A380. Dubai World Central also creates the world’s first truly integrated multi-modal logistics platform with all transportation modes, logistics and value-added services, such as product manufacturing and assembly in a single-bonded free zone environment made up of Dubai Logistics City, Dubai World Central International Airport and Jebel Ali Port. Other Dubai World Central components include: Residential City, Commercial City, Golf Course, and Enterprise Park.

MIDDLE EAST - KUWAIT
 

    L&T bags fuel facility contract at Kuwait Airport

Larsen & Toubro Limited was awarded an Engineer-Procure-Construct contract valued at Rs.581 crore (37.98 million Kuwait Dinar) from Kuwait Aviation Fuelling Company (KAFCO) for its new fuel depot project at Kuwait International Airport, L&T has recently announced. To be completed in 24 months, L&T won the contract through international competitive bidding. The new project will cater to the expanding needs of the international airport. The project involves pumping fuel through underground pipelines from Mina Al-Ahmadi Refinery to the storage depot. 

L&T will be engaged in installation of new pumping units at MAA Refinery, laying of cross country jet fuel pipeline from the refinery to fuel depot, construction of six 33-m dia and 11 m high fuel tanks at the new storage depot, installation of an interconnecting pipeline from the new fuel depot to existing hydrant system of the airport, construction of headquarters building, providing state-of-the-art depot control system with associated instrumentation works and the complete electrical system including the total power backup facilities.
