Qatar Airways constructs new premium terminal at Doha Airport

Qatar Airways recently unveiled details of a dedicated First and Business Class terminal currently under construction at Doha International Airport as part of a US$200million expansion at the current airport. Qatar Airways which manages and operates Doha International Airport will also be responsible for the new premium class terminal. Construction of the 10,000 sq m building began earlier this year at a site next to the main terminal at Doha International Airport. Dubai-based Micekraft was appointed by Qatar Airways to design the new terminal interiors. Due to open this summer, the terminal will be operational round-the-clock.

An additional 21,000 sq m of space is being added to the existing airport terminal. The number of boarding gates will be increased from 10 to 16; there will be two additional immigration counters; new e-gates in arrival and departure. By early next year, the number of parking bays will reach 40. The airport terminal expansion is due to be completed by June.

KLIA to invest EUR 20 million for high-speed baggage handling system

The Ministry of Transport of Malaysia has awarded Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) a contract worth more than EUR 20 million to supply and install a high-speed baggage handling system. The new system will make baggage transfer times between the satellite terminal at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and the Express Rail Link (ERL) platform in the main terminal up to five times faster. The project is scheduled to be completed by September 2007. The new baggage handling system (BHS) from Siemens will transport baggage between the two terminals at speeds of up to 36 km/hour, compared to the previous rate of 7.2 km/hour. The system uses a high-speed tray conveyor system in which bags are placed on individual trays for better control and tracking at high speed compared to conventional belt conveyors. The additional conveyor lines will also increase the capacity of the ERL baggage handling at KLIA.

ACSA invests R37 million in George Airport terminal upgrading

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) recently announced the upgrading of the current terminal of George Airport to create more passenger capacity. The R37m project is scheduled to be completed by March 2007. This project will create opportunities for more food and beverage and retail outlets. This will also include the relocation of the car rental facilities from within the terminal to the landside of the terminal. The upgrade to the terminal will be primarily to create capacity in the passenger departure and arrival areas. To minimise the anticipated inconvenience to passengers and users, the project will be done in a phased manner with the car rental relocation and arrivals terminal upgrade scheduled to be completed long before the December 2006 peak period.
